to many of his friends was a New Zealander who was a qualified and expert machinist fitter who was well respected for his ability to design and build modern equipment in his years at Newnes in Salmon Arm. He was a tireless volunteer helping others in the community. He served as a volunteer ambulance attendant, on the hospital board, and his Hawaiian band played around the community including at Pioneer Lodge. In 1974 Smitty took part in the “Take Care Of Business” jamming marathon, setting a world record with 1,322 guitarists, Ray being the most senior, playing for 68 minutes, 40 seconds.
