Gail began life in Winnipeg, the eldest child of Bud and Erna Harbottle, sister of Susan (Hudson), John and Bill. She met Brian at medical school (University of Manitoba, Class of 1965), they were married in 1966. Following time in Montreal and San Francisco, Gail and Brian returned to Winnipeg where Gail worked as a kidney specialist and researcher at Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre. She treasured the summers at their remote cabin on Middle Island in Lake of the Woods. In 1980 the family moved to Salmon Arm BC, where Gail embraced farm life. Through her curiosity, intelligence, and compassion, she allowed the land and animals to teach her and her family the meaning and gratitude that only comes from an honest life, connected to the things that nourish us. Gail returned to medicine as a Geriatrician at Bastion Place. She approached this work full of devotion and dedication to her patients, their lives and personal stories. Gail and Brian eventually retired to the Larch Hills where they built an off-grid home, tended less lawn and more lavender. Gail continued to weave and create gifts for her grandchildren, she grew closer to the natural changing of seasons in the Larch Hills. Gail’s kindness, wit, and spark made for so many treasured friendships. From a life in medicine to farming sheep, trips to France, and gardens of lavender, she followed her instincts for beauty and gave those around her the courage to follow theirs.
